Some time ago, I took the exam and passed the eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT). Recently, I decided to share my experience about the exam and how I prepared for it.

To be straightforward, the exam is practical and not complicated at all. With a solid foundation and some level of experience, even in CTFs, I believe anyone can do well.

To be clear, I only purchased the exam voucher, without acquiring the INE course. I used the knowledge gained from the Novo Pentest Profissional (NPP) by Desec and Tryhackme labs as my foundation, which I’ll discuss further below.

The Exam

On exam day, I reserved the entire weekend to fully dedicate myself to it. I confess that I completed the exam in about 6 hours and spent the remaining time reviewing, ensuring I hadn’t left anything blank or answered incorrectly.

The exam lasts 48 hours and consists of 35 practical questions. To answer them, you need to explore the environment, making it a practical test rather than a theoretical one.

The Environment

Access to the exam occurs through a browser, providing entry to the laboratory. A pre-configured version of Kali Linux is made available to participants. This online lab allows you to take the exam on any device and location, as long as there’s an internet connection, eliminating the need to set up your own virtual machines.

What I Studied

As mentioned, one of my foundations was the NPP course by Desec. After completing it, I dedicated a month to Tryhackme labs. The topics I reviewed and explored on Tryhackme included:

  • Network fundamentals
  • Introduction to penetration testing
  • Fundamental concepts in Linux and Windows
  • Exploitation
  • Privilege escalation

Boldly, I participated in some free CTFs to challenge myself and gauge whether I was ready for the exam.

Conclusion

The eJPT exam was a fun experience. At first, I was nervous, but I gradually relaxed and enjoyed it. What was interesting was that some questions really made me think and research to avoid wrong answers. I believe the most rewarding aspect of security is the constant challenge and learning.

These are the main memories from the exam, but if you have any questions about the certification, feel free to reach out, and we can chat about it.

Happy studying!
